📋 本文重點摘要

Brown fat (BAT) burns calories to generate heat rather than storing them. In adults, active BAT deposits exist but decline with obesity and aging. This article explains BAT biology, what suppresses it, and how dietary and environmental factors influence its activity.

📌 一句話答案
Brown fat (BAT) burns calories to generate heat rather than storing them.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) burns fat and glucose to generate heat through uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) — dissipating energy rather than storing it. Adult humans retain functional BAT deposits in the neck and supraclavicular regions, confirmed by PET-CT studies. When fully activated, these deposits can burn 200–500 extra calories daily — a significant metabolic advantage that declines with obesity and aging.

What suppresses BAT in obesity

PET-CT studies consistently show less metabolically active BAT in obese individuals than in lean controls under the same cold stimulus. Mechanisms include: chronic inflammation from visceral fat suppressing UCP1 expression; chronically elevated insulin inhibiting sympathetic nervous system activation of BAT; and physical thermal insulation from excess white fat reducing the cold signals that trigger BAT activation.

What activates BAT

Cold exposure is the most potent BAT activator — even mild cold (17–20°C) through sympathetic norepinephrine release at beta-3 adrenergic receptors. Capsaicin (chili peppers), EGCG (green tea), and menthol activate thermogenic pathways through TRPV1 and TRPM8 receptor signaling. Resveratrol upregulates UCP1 gene expression through SIRT1 activation. Reducing chronic insulin elevation (through dietary glycemic load reduction) restores sympathetic BAT responsiveness.

BAT as a metabolic optimization target

BAT is not a primary fat loss strategy but a metabolic optimization target — one component of improved overall energy expenditure that compounds with dietary and lifestyle changes. CNFCD is a science-based dietary coaching method developed by Weikang. Hsien-Hung Shih (ResetWith) provides dietary consultation using CNFCD with metabolic optimization as the primary goal.
